I noticed today that we have and tags. The former is currently on 302 questions and the latter is on 121.

The tag wiki excerpt for the former says:

Ancillary circuitry added to a design that provides protection of the main circuitry to enable the main circuits continuing functioning. In some cases the protection circuitry is sacrificial, being destroyed or degraded in the act of protecting. But not all protection circuits may do this. Examples of faults protected against are: Overvoltage, ESD, overheating, Overloading (too high of a current draw) amongst others.

The tag wiki excerpt for the latter says:

A device, components, or safety measure designed to protect circuits from overvoltage, overcurrent, a combination of these; or the theory of same.

Is there any difference in these tags? Should they be made synonyms/merged?

    \$\begingroup\$ Are the tags at all meaningful? They are awfully broad. Overvoltage, undervoltage, transients, ESD, EMI, overcurrent, creepage, polarity, reverse voltage, heat, dust, moisture, chemicals... the list goes ever on. \$\endgroup\$ – Lundin Nov 4 '16 at 13:52

    \$\begingroup\$ @Lundin There are tags for esd, undervoltage (but not overvoltage), current-limiting, emi-filtering, etc. They are broad but could be useful as a catch-all for general circuit protection. A circuit might need to be protected from overvoltage, undervoltage, ESD, reverse voltage, transients, overcurrent, etc., all at the same time -- a question about such a circuit could run out of tags that could be applied. \$\endgroup\$ – Null Nov 4 '16 at 14:37
