The vast majority of the site is text.
I believe their is research which indicates that serif faces are easier to read for bulk text than sans serif faces.
Sans Serif is good for titles and labels....

Did the "visited link" color change recently?
Yes, it did change. Until a few days ago, the visited links were simply a darker bluish-purple color. I have no idea why the change was made, and I agree, the red is too disruptive.
